Women's competition expands to 52 teams in 2021 Mon, March 8, 2021 - 12:01 PM

The Perth Football League women’s competition continues to expand with 12 new clubs joining in season 2021.

Along with these 12 clubs joining with brand new teams, three clubs have expanded to include two women’s sides, taking the total number of teams to 52.

Wembley, North Fremantle, Melville, Scarborough, Whitfords, Manning, Yanchep, Ballajura, Ellenbrook, Coolbinia, Hammersley Carine and Baldivis join with one side each while Cottesloe, Piara Waters and Rossmoyne have all added a second team.

The Perth Football League Women’s competition kicked off in 2018 with 16 teams and has seen a rapid growth in participation over such a short period of time.

Perth Football League Operations Coordinator, Jill Saunders, said the flood of women signing up had injected new life into clubs and had created a talent pathway from amateur to elite competition for girls.

"Both West Australian AFL clubs competing in the AFLW competition has made women’s football more accessible for fans. The Perth Football League provides the space for girls of all abilities to come down, play, and enjoy our great game,” she said.

The women’s competition kicks off on Saturday 24 April.
